911 Alert! Portage County Residents
With the new 911 system, there is SEVEN SECONDS OF SILENCE before you hear your call start to ring. DON'T HANG UP! Your call is on its way as soon as you finish dialing - you just don't hear it happening. In an emergency, this silence may seem a lot longer than seven seconds; however, the system is routing your call to the proper 911 communications center and identifying the name, address, and telephone number from where you are calling. When the communications center answers your call, this information appears on their computer screen. This system saves time sending help and lets the dispatcher know where you are, even if you are unable to do so.
