EXOTIC PETS OR WILD ANIMALS ORDINANCE

9.101 SALE AND KEEPING OF EXOTIC PETS OR WILD ANIMALS. (1) PROHIBITION. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep, maintain, have in his possession or under his control, or sell or convey within the Village any exotic pet, wild animal, dangerous or carnivorous animal, reptile, any vicious or dangerous domesticated animals, or any other animal or reptile of wild, vicious or dangerous propensities. It shall be specifically unlawful for any person to keep, maintain or have in his possession or under his control within the Village any of the following:

(a) All poisonous animals, including rear fang snakes
(b) All nonhuman primates, including, but not limited to, apes, chimpanzees, gibbons, gorillas, orangutans and siamangs
(c) Baboons
(d) Bears
(e) Bison
(f) Cheetahs
(g) Constrictor snakes
(h) Coyotes
(i) Crocodilians
(j) Deer
(k) Elephants
(l) Game cocks and other fighting birds
(m) Hippopotami
(n) Hyenas
(o) Jaguars
(p) Leopards
(q) Lions
(r) Lynxes
(s) Monkeys, either old world or new world
(t) Ostriches
(u) Pumas
(v) Rhinoceroses
(w) Sharks
(x) Snakes not naturally indigenous to Portage County
(y) Snow leopards
(z) Swine
(aa) Tigers
(bb) Wolves and wolf hybrids

(2) EXCEPTIONS. The provisions of sub. (1) above shall not apply to circuses, menageries and other temporary licensed exhibitions if:

(a) Their location conforms to the provisions of Ch. 17 of this Code.

(b) All animals and animal quarters are kept in a clean and sanitary condition and so maintained as to eliminate objectionable odors.

(c) All animals that are confined are in quarters to constructed as to prevent their escape.

(d) No person lives or resides within 100 feet of the quarters in which the animals are kept.

This provision may not apply to the keeping of small caged birds, small caged animals or reptiles or aquatic and amphibian animals solely as pets.
