Geographic Information System (GIS) Department

Mission Statement

The mission of the GIS Department is to provide and support GIS technology in an effective, intelligible, and timely manner that meets the needs of all Village departments, and enables them to better serve the public.

GIS Overview

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things that exist and happen on the surface of the Earth. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with unique visualization offered by maps. These abilities distinguish GIS from other information systems and make it valuable to a wide range of public organizations for explaining events, predicting outcomes, and planning strategies. Mapmaking and geographic analysis are not new, but a GIS performs these tasks better and faster than conventional manual methods. Before GIS technology, only a few people had the skills necessary to use geographic information to help with decision making and problem solving.

GIS in Plover

The Village of Plover's Geographical Information System began in the year of 1989, to better serve the water and sewer departments in the maintenance of their water and sewer mains. Since its inception, the GIS has expanded, and is now being used in all departments.

The GIS is managed by the Village's GIS Manager. The GIS Manager position was added in 1999, and is responsible for database administration, supervision and training of Village staff, provides technical assistance in GIS software and hardware, implements standards and procedures, and provides data conversion when necessary. The GIS Department currently maintain 30 GIS layers, including the Village of Plover parcel base map.

The GIS Department produces various maps which include:

  • Cemetery Lot Maps
